Meaning of VISCOUNT in English

1. a member of the British peerage who is next in rank above a baron and next below an earl (1). The wife of a viscount, or a female viscount, is called a viscountess . A viscount has the title ‘Lord’ and a viscountess ‘Lady’.

2. a courtesy title given to the eldest son of an earl (1).
