( born Archibald Percival Wavell 1883–1950)
a senior military officer in charge of British forces in the Middle East from 1939 to 1941, during World War II . He later commanded British forces in India and from 1943 to 1947 he was Viceroy of India (= the representative of the British government ruling India when it was part of the British Empire ). He was made an earl (1) in 1947.
