Meaning of LITERALLY in English

■ adverb in a literal manner or sense.

↘ informal used for emphasis while not being actually true: we ~ killed ourselves laughing.

Usage

In its standard use ~ means ‘in a literal sense’. In recent years an extended use of ~ has become very common, where it is used for effect in non-literal contexts (as in we ~ killed ourselves laughing ), but this use is not acceptable in standard English.
