SIDRAT-AL-MUNTAHA

Meaning of SIDRAT-AL-MUNTAHA in English

[Islamic] "Cedar of the end". A huge tree that stands in heaven on the seventh stratum, just under God's throne. Each leave has the name of a person written on it. When the leaf falls, the bearer of that name dies. The angel of death will catch the leaf, read the name on it, then descend to earth to take the soul of that person without delay. The word sidra has also been translated as 'lote tree' or as 'jujube tree' (zizyphus). Qur'an 53:14.
