MICROBE

Short for Microorganism. Small organisms that can be seen only with the aid of a microscope. The term encompasses viruses, bacteria, yeast, molds, protozoa, and small algae; however, microbe is used most frequently to refer to bacteria. Microbes are important in the degradation and decomposition of organic materials added to the environment by natural and artificial mechanisms. Also referred to as Germs.
