ISO

Meaning of ISO in English

"ISO" is a word derived from the Greek isos, meaning "equal". It is the root of the prefix "iso-", as in "isometric" (of equal measure or dimensions) or "isonomy" (equality of laws, or of people before the law). The choice of "ISO" as the name for the organization implies "equal" or "standard". It also avoids the plethora of acronyms resulting from the translation of the actual name of the organization, "International Organization for Standardization". (It would be IOS in English and OIN in French; Organisation Internationale de Normalisation).
