col- BrE AmE ¦kɒ, kə AmE ¦kɑː, kə —This prefix, found only before l , is pronounced stressed ¦kɒ AmE ¦kɑː (1) if the following syllable is unstressed ( ˌ collo ˈ cation), (2) in a few two-syllable nouns ( ˈ colleague; but col ˈ lapse with kə- ); and (3) occasionally, in context, when contrastively stressed (to select and ˈ collect). Otherwise it is usually weak kə (col ˈ lision).
