(1757–1834) a Scottish ↑ architect and engineer, known for building bridges, roads, and ↑ canal s . Some of his bridges are still used today, including the road bridge across the ↑ Menai Straits in North Wales. A new town called Telford, named after him, was built in central England in the 1960s.
