War ‧ hol, An ‧ dy /ˈwɔːhəʊl $ ˈwɔːr-, ˈændi/ BrE AmE

(1926–87) a US artist who had an important influence on modern art and music, especially in the 1960s. He is known for his pictures in the ↑ pop art style, which were of ordinary objects such as the Campbell's Soup Can , or of famous people such as Marilyn ↑ Monroe . He also made films such as The Chelsea Girls (1966) and Trash (1970). His films, which usually dealt with sex and drugs, did not try to tell stories and the actors often invented their words as they spoke.
