The combination of obesity, somnolence, hypoventilation (underbreathing), and plethoric (red) face named after the "fat and red-faced boy in a state of somnolency" in Charles Dickens’ novel The Pickwick Papers. (The same boy is thought by some to have had Prader-Willi syndrome).
