CETYL ALCOHOL

[ce.tyl alcohol] n [ISV cet- (fr. L cetus whale) + -yl; fr. its occurrence in spermaceti] (1873): a waxy crystalline alcohol obtained by the saponification of spermaceti or the hydrogenation of palmitic acid and used esp. in pharmaceutical and cosmetic preparations and in making detergents
