WORD ORIGIN

Middle English : from Scottish Gaelic bàrd , Irish bard , Welsh bardd , of Celtic origin. In Scotland in the 16th cent. it was a derogatory term for a travelling musician, but was later romanticized by Sir Walter Scott.
