noun sense 1 and verb senses 1 to 3 Middle English (originally referring to the edge put on fabric to stop it unravelling): from Old English liste border , of Germanic origin; related to Dutch lijst and German Leiste . The current senses are late 16th cent., from French liste , of Germanic origin.

noun sense 2 and verb sense 4 early 17th cent.: of unknown origin.
