PERMAFROST

A natural material that has been frozen solid continuously for more than two years. The surface thaws and refreezes each year creating a saturated, very spongy layer called the active layer. Permafrost is still common in Canada, Alaska and Russia, where it underlies huge areas and creates special problems for building.
