: a substance that inhibits a cholinesterase by combination with it: as

a. : a drug (as physostigmine or neostigmine) useful as a cholinergic stimulant whose effect on a cholinesterase is reversible

b. : a nerve poison ; especially : an organic phosphate derivative (as tetraethyl pyrophosphate or parathion) useful as an insecticide whose effect on a cholinesterase is irreversible or only partially reversible
