: a white crystalline base C(OH)(C 6 H 4 NH 2 ) 3 that is the parent compound of many triphenylmethane dyes (as crystal violet or fuchsine) ; also : the red chloride of this base obtainable by oxidation of a mixture of aniline and the para isomer of toluidine and used chiefly in coloring paper, as a biological stain, and in the preparation of other dyes — see dye table I (under Basic Red 9 )
