2. : an operation in a process of producing wrought iron in which molten pig iron is poured into a ladle of molten slag at a temperature below the freezing point of the iron so that small globules of iron are formed, the slag absorbs the gases, and on cooling a porous ball of wrought iron forms — compare puddling
