MULTIBIT RASTER

(n.) A raster that has more than one bit plane . The number of colors or gray-scale values that can be contained in the raster increases exponentially with an increase in the number of bits per pixel assigned to the raster. An 8-bit raster can hold 256 colors or gray-scale values, and a 24-bit raster can hold more than 16 million values.
