U.S. painter, sculptor, and graphic artist.

After studies at the Art Institute of Chicago, he settled in New York City and became a leading exponent of Pop art . He achieved wide recognition for paintings and prints featuring geometric shapes emblazoned with lettering and vivid colours. In 1964 he collaborated with Andy Warhol on the film Eat and was commissioned to produce an EAT sign for the New York pavilion at the New York World's Fair. His most famous image, LOVE , first lettered on canvas in 1965, became a universal symbol for the hippie generation.
