biblical Ellasar
Ancient capital of Babylonia , located on the Euphrates River in present-day southern Iraq.
It was founded in prehistoric times and flourished in a period of Sumerian decline ( 0441; 2000 0441; 1760 BC), when long-distance trade connected the Euphrates with the Indus River valley. Hammurabi of Babylon gained control of the area in 1763 BC.
