n.
City (pop., 2001: metro area, 432,451), southeastern Ontario.
It lies on the Thames River, near several of the Great Lakes . Its name and site were chosen in 1792 for the location of a capital of Upper Canada, but the plans failed to materialize. First settled in 1826, it was incorporated as a city in 1855. It became an important transportation and industrial centre as a result of its interlake location. It is the seat of the University of Western Ontario.
