Located near the town of Menindee, they are part of the Darling River Conservation Scheme. The lakes are flooded through creeks linking them with the Darling River . The total capacity of the Menindee Lakes Storage Scheme is 2 million acre-ft (2.47 billion cubic-m). Menindee is an Aboriginal word meaning "egg yolk."
