Lake, south-central Florida, U.S. It is the largest lake in the southern U.S. and the third largest freshwater lake wholly within the country.

It drains to the sea through the Everglades . It is a remnant of the prehistoric Pamlico Sea, and its name means "Big Water" in the language of the Seminole Indians, who still live on the lake's northwestern shore.
