City (pop., 2000: 185,951), central Florida, U.S. Settlement began 0441; 1844 around an army post.
It was renamed in 1857 to honour Orlando Reeves, an army sentry killed during the Seminole Wars . After 1950 the development of the aerospace complex at Cape Canaveral and, after 1971, of nearby Disney World boosted the city's population and economy. It is also the centre of a citrus farming region.
