British surgeon and physiologist.
In 1834 he discovered the parasite that causes trichinosis. He gave excellent descriptions of breast cancer, Paget disease of breast (an inflammatory cancerous condition around the nipple), and Paget disease of bone (1877). He was one of the first to recommend surgical removal of bone marrow tumours instead of amputation of the limb.
