It was the capital of Cyrus II , founder of the Achaemenian dynasty . He was said to have founded the city on the site of his victory over the last king of the Medes ( 0441; 550 BC). The city was surrendered to Alexander the Great in 330 BC. It was known for the majestic simplicity of its architecture; its ruins include the bases of several large buildings and the nearly intact tomb of Cyrus.
