Town (pop., 2002 est.: 16,134), western Germany.

Located on the left bank of the Rhine River , southeast of Bonn , it originated as a Roman fortress and still has Roman remains. During World War II its railroad bridge was the site where Allied troops forced a crossing of the Rhine (1945) for the first time in the war.
