Chinese Buddhist monk and philosopher.
After training as a Buddhist monk near Ningbo, he helped organize the Association for the Advancement of Buddhism (1912). In 1921 he began publication of the influential journal Haichaoyin ("The Voice of the Sea Tide"). Heavily influenced by Sun Yat-sen and the revolution of 1911, he sought to reform the education of monks and promoted social welfare activities. From 1925 to 1941 he traveled extensively to promote the formation of national and international Buddhist organizations in Japan, Europe, the U.S., and South and Southeast Asia.
