n.
City (pop., 2000 est.: 150,624), capital of Florida, U.S. Originally an Appalachee Indian village, the area attracted Spanish settlers after the visit of Hernando de Soto in 1539.
Tallahassee became the capital of the Florida Territory in 1824 and of the state in 1845. During the American Civil War it was the only capital of a Confederate state east of the Mississippi not captured by Union forces. Today it is a wholesaling and distribution point for the surrounding lumber, cotton, and cattle-raising industries. Educational institutions include Florida State University (founded 1851).
