With the cities of Toronto , Etobicoke , Scarborough , and North York and the borough of East York , it forms part of the municipality of Metropolitan Toronto. Occupying an area of 9 sq mi (23 sq km), York was established in 1967 through the amalgamation of the former township of York and the town of Weston. The original York township was formed in 1793.
