CAERNARFON

Meaning of CAERNARFON in English

Town (pop., 1995 est.: 10,000), seat of Gwynedd county, Wales.

Located near the west end of the Menai Strait , it was the site of a Roman fort, Segontium, built с AD 75. After the Roman withdrawal (с 380–390), it was the seat of local chieftains. The township was completely transformed by Edward I after his conquest of Wales in 1282. The imposing castle he built (birthplace of his son Edward II ) has been preserved, and since 1911 it has been the site of the investiture of the prince of Wales.
