Located at the southern entrance to the Bay of Naples , it has an area of 4 sq mi (10 sq km). Cliffs on the eastern side rise 900 ft (275 m); its highest point is 1,923 ft (586 m). It was a colony of ancient Greece; later it became a favorite resort of Roman emperors. In the Middle Ages it belonged to the abbey of Montecassino and to the republic of Amalfi before passing to the kingdom of Naples . Its rocky shores abound with caves, notably the famous Blue Grotto. Capri is one of Italy's most popular resorts.
