American explorer.

He served in the French and Indian War. In 1766 he was sent by Maj. Robert Rogers to explore an area west of northern Michigan. He traveled through the Great Lakes and up the Mississippi River, wintering in a Sioux village. Though his travel journal (published 1778) was a huge success, he died penniless.
