For a time the capital of the kingdom of Parthia , it was located at the southern foot of the eastern Elburz Mountains . It was a Arsacid capital. Known to have been on the {{link=Silk Road">Silk Road between the Middle East and China, it may have been located between the Iranian cities of Dāmghān and Shāhrūd, but its precise site has not been established.
