City (pop., 1999: metro. area, 790,000), capital of Togo.
Located on the Gulf of Guinea in southwestern Togo, it was chosen as the capital of German Togoland in 1897 and developed as an administrative and commercial centre. Its port was modernized in the 1960s, and its deepwater harbour is a major shipping centre. An oil refinery was opened in 1978. It is the site of the University of Bénin (1965).
