Bird of the migratory gallinule species ( Gallinula chloropus , family Rallidae) of Europe, Africa, and eastern North America.
Moorhens are blackish and have a scarlet frontal shield (fleshy plate on the forehead). In North America, the moorhen is sometimes called the Florida gallinule.
