Located on the Black Sea , it was the site of an ancient Greek colony that was later held successively by the Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans, and Russians. It became a popular resort. After Georgia's independence (1991), it was the centre of a rebellion for Abkhazian independence. It is the capital of the autonomous republic of Abkhazia.
