German Thüringen
Historic region and state (pop., 2002 est.: 2,411,000), Germany.
It includes the land around the Thuringian Forest in what was formerly southwestern Erfurt . The Germanic Thuringians appeared after с AD 350 and were conquered by the Huns in the mid-5th century. In 1485 Thuringia became part of Saxony and was divided into several states; they joined the German Empire in 1871 and were reunited after World War I. Following the partition of Germany in 1945, the state became part of East Germany; it was reconstituted as a state of reunified Germany in 1990. The economy is largely industrial.
