U.S. mathematician.
He studied at the University of Wisconsin, taught there (1920–32), and directed the Rockefeller Foundation's Natural Science Division (1932–55). He is considered the first person to propose using electronic computers for the translation of natural languages. In a 1949 memo, he proposed that statistical techniques from the field of information theory could be used to enable computers to translate text from one natural language to another automatically. His proposal was based on the assumption that a document in a human language can be viewed as having been written in code, which can be broken like other codes.
