YAMATO TAKERU

Meaning of YAMATO TAKERU in English

Japanese folk hero who may have lived in the 2nd century AD.

The son of the 12th emperor, Keiko, he was responsible for expanding the territory of the Yamato court. In stories, he subdued two Kumaso warriors by disguising himself as a woman and killing them while they were drunk. With a miraculous sword he then cut away the burning grass fire set by the Ainu tribesmen and escaped. On the plains of Tagi, he became ill, changed into a white plover, and disappeared. His tomb at Ise is known as the Mausoleum of the White Plover.
