born Nov. 22, 1902, Avellino, Italy died Nov. 26, 1971, Ancona original name Giuseppe Antonio Doto major American crime-syndicate boss in New York and New Jersey. Born near Naples, Adonis came to America as a child and in the 1920s became a follower of Lucky Luciano. He was one of the assassins of crime czar Giuseppe Masseria in 1931, leading to Luciano's supremacy in organized crime. As a rackets boss, Adonis specialized in labour racketeering, gambling, and hijacking. In 1951 he was convicted of violating gambling laws and sentenced to two to three years in prison. In 1953 he was ordered deported to Italy.
