Meaning of ALBORG in English

also spelled Aalborg city, port, and seat of Nordjylland amtskommune (county commune), northern Jutland, Denmark, on the south side of Limfjorden. It has existed since about AD 1000 and is one of the oldest towns in Denmark. Chartered in 1342, it became a bishop's see in 1554. The town recovered slowly from the Count's War (a religious civil war, 153336) to become a major commercial centre in the 17th century and was Denmark's second largest city until about 1850. It is the site of the Danish surrender (1629) to Albrecht von Wallenstein (the Roman Catholic commander) during the Thirty Years' War. lborg has shipbuilding facilities, and its manufactures include cement, tobacco, chemicals, textiles, and spirits, notably akvavit, the fiery Danish national drink. lborghallen (1953) is Scandinavia's largest conference and concert complex. Medieval landmarks include the Holy Ghost Monastery (1431), the Budolfi Church (cathedral; c. 1500), and lborghus (castle; 1539). The lborg art and historical museum houses relics from the Viking ship cemetery at nearby Lindholm Hills. The Rebild Hills National Park (1912), 19 miles (31 km) south, a gift from Americans of Danish descent, is the site of the Udvandrer-Museum (Emigration Museum). The University Centre of lborg opened in 1974. Pop. (1982 est.) city, 114,970; (1983 est.) mun., 157,270.
