ALEKSANDRIYA

also spelled Aleksandrija, or Aleksandriia, city, Kirovograd oblast (province), Ukraine, on the Ingulets River. Founded as Usovka in 1754, it was incorporated and renamed in the same year. The city is now the centre of a lignite (brown coal) field that has been utilized since the 1950s to power local rayon fibre engineering and other plants. Pop. (1991 est.) 104,900.
