king of Naples in Shakespeare's The Tempest. Though it is clear at the beginning of the play that Alonso has made a grave mistake in assisting the plot to overthrow Prospero, his guilty conscience and deep regret come close to redeeming him. Acting as a foil for the remorseless Antonio, Alonso becomes a sympathetic characterone who, despite his flaws, will provide adequate rule for Naples because of his ability to learn from his experiences.
