gemeente (commune), in Noord-Holland provincie, western Netherlands, near the Amstel River. Amstelveen (meaning peat bog on the Amstel) was formerly a village in the municipality of Nieuwer-Amstel. A residential suburb of Amsterdam, it is a water-sports centre with some agriculture and light industry. Schiphol international airport is nearby to the west. Pop. (1986 est.) 68,090.
