Spanish Andaluca comunidad autnoma (autonomous community) and historical region of Spain, encompassing the provincias of Huelva, Cdiz, Seville, Mlaga, Crdoba, Jan, Granada, and Almera. The comunidad autnoma was established by the statute of autonomy of 1981. The southernmost region of Spain, Andalusia is bounded by the Mediterranean Sea on the southeast, the Atlantic Ocean on the southwest, and Portugal on the west. To the east lies the comunidad autnoma of Murcia, and to the north are those of Extremadura and CastileLa Mancha. Area 33,822 square miles (87,599 square km). Pop. (1998 est.) 7,236,459. city, seat (1841) of Covington county, southern Alabama, U.S., near the Conecuh River. It originated in the 1830s as New Site (relocated on higher ground because of floods) and was crossed by the Three-Notched Trail, used by Andrew Jackson during his Creek Indian campaign (181314). Renamed Andalusia in 1846, it developed after the arrival in 1899 of the Central of Georgia and the Louisville and Nashville railroads. An agricultural and timber-based economy prevails, supplemented by light manufacturing. Lurleen B. Wallace State Junior College was opened in 1969. Conecuh National Forest is nearby. Inc. 1901. Pop. (1990) 9,269.
