a deputy in Shakespeare's Measure for Measure who is appointed by Duke Vincentio to enforce laws against immorality during the duke's pretended absence. Though Angelo has a reputation as a man of stricture and firm abstinence, he nevertheless succumbs to the evil passion of his own nature when he offers to spare Claudio's life in exchange for the favours of Isabella.
