ANTIPHANES

flourished 4th century BC, , Athens together with Alexis, the principal representative of the writers of the Middle Comedy at Athens. In this genre, which succeeded the Old Comedy of Aristophanes, scurrility gave place to parody and to criticism of literature and philosophy. Only fragments of Antiphanes' writing survive, though the titles of 134 plays by him are known.
