a churlish philosopher in Shakespeare's Timon of Athens. Apemantus is deeply contemptuous of the world of Athens and serves as a cynical commentator on the action of the play. He warns Timon to beware false friends and shows no pity for Timon after the noble Athenian has fallen into abject poverty.
