Meaning of ARAWA in English

town, on the southeast coast of Bougainville Island, Papua New Guinea. Arawa is a planned suburban town on flatland near Arawa Bay. It was built to house the employees of Bougainville Copper Ltd., whose open-pit mine is located 16 miles (26 km) to the southwest at Panguna. The initial stage of the town was completed in 1972. The towns of Panguna, Arawa, Kieta, and Toniva are essentially one commercial and industrial entity involved in copper mining and the shipment of ore. Pop. (1984 est.) 14,900.
